Today is August 8, 2008 -- the eighth day of the eighth month of the eighth year in the new millenium, and the Olympic games open in China, where eight is a lucky number.
In London, they have set up an enormous screen in Trafalgar Square to broadcast the Olympics for all to see. Large crowds of people are sitting and standing on the steps of museums, in the square, and around the fountain, just watching the action on the screen.
Just a few blocks from our apartment is the main mosque in London, and today it was the location of a group of protesters chanting and carrying signs complaining about the poor treatment China gives to Muslims. London police filled the area to keep the peace. Many passersby stopped to watch. I happened to be getting off the bus from a shopping trip, so I pulled my camera out of my bag and took some pictures of the event.
